Perinatal Mental Health

“Becoming new parents is like embarking on a great big adventure without a map or destination. You don’t really know how to navigate things or where you are going, but you also know it is going to be the best thing that you have ever done in your life.”

Pregnancy and Postpartum Support for New and Expecting Parents

Pregnancy and the arrival of a baby can bring a mix of joy, change, and unexpected challenges. While this period is often described as one of the happiest times in life, it doesn’t always feel that way. You might feel anxious, low, overwhelmed, or even disconnected – from yourself, your baby, or those around you. And when everyone expects you to be glowing with happiness, it can be hard to speak up.
You are not alone.

Mental health struggles during pregnancy and after birth are more common than many people realize. Beyond postpartum depression, parents may also experience anxiety, obsessive thoughts, panic, trauma-related symptoms, or mood swings. These experiences can affect anyone – regardless of background, culture, or life circumstances.

Whether you’re a first-time parent, navigating a loss, or dealing with the emotional intensity of this period, your feelings are valid. There is no shame in struggling, and you don’t have to go through it alone.

Perinatal (Pregnancy and Postpartum) Mental Health Support Group

As a psychologist, I offer a safe and supportive space where we can explore what you’re going through. Together, we’ll work towards understanding your experience, strengthening your resilience, and finding ways to feel more connected, calm, and grounded.

With the right support, things can get better.

Ask yourself:

  • Do you feel sad or depressed?
  • Are you more irritable or angry with those around you?
  • Are you having difficulty bonding with your baby?
  • Do you feel anxious or panicky?
  • Are you having problems with eating or sleeping?
  • Do you have upsetting thoughts that you can’t get out of your mind?
  • Do you feel “out of control” or like you’re “going crazy”?
  • Do you sometimes feel like you never should have become a parent?
  • Are you worried that you might hurt your baby or yourself?

Any of these symptoms, and many more, could mean that you have a perinatal mental health disorder.
